E. Hahnenkratt was founded in 1932 in Königsbach-Stein near Pforzheim. The family is in its fourth generation in the business, and every product is still made exclusively in Germany.
The company employs more than 80 people at its plant in Stein. Unlike most of the dental industry, Hahnenkratt did not move production abroad, mirrors, explorers, matrix systems and posts are made in the same building, which was extended twice in 1989.
On an ordinary mirror the reflective layer sits behind the glass, so light passes through the glass twice and produces a double contour. The front-surface design places the layer on the front: the image is single and sharp. The difference is most visible when you are assessing a fissure or a preparation margin, and decisive in intraoral photography. Hahnenkratt produces front-surface mirrors in rhodium, titanium/chromium and ultra-bright versions.
The RELAX and ERGOtouch lines were built around a simple premise: an instrument you hold for eight hours a day must not tire you. A soft silicone handle reduces the grip force required, and a larger diameter relieves the small muscles of the hand. The handle colours are not decoration, they identify cassettes, operatories or individual clinicians.
